Importance of Precise Crop Nutrition under Desert Growing Conditions

Efficient crop nutrition management aims to synchronize nutrient supply with plant dynamic needs and combines the usage of enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEF) and nutrient monitoring technologies. This improves NUE and ensures crop high productivity under normal growing conditions but, furthermore under the desert challenging growing conditions. Precise nutrition helps crops to cope better with the different abiotic stresses permanently present in the desert environment such as water scarcity, saline soil and irrigation water, alkaline, and sodic soils, low soil fertility (sandy), and elevated temperature.

    Salinity is among the abiotic stresses most negatively affecting agricultural crops due to interference within crop growth and development. Evidence indicates osmotic stress induces oxidative stress that leads to an increase and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the plant cells.  Usage of plant extract-based bio-stimulants containing bioactive compounds (antioxidants) helps crops to cope with osmotic stress caused to the plants because of the use of saline-brackish water for irrigation that results in yield reduction.

    An integrated bio-stimulant approach, aims for the enhancement of the plant-soil-water system in desert conditions and the introduction of different active molecules per phenological stage of the plant, revealing their mode of action under high temperatures, salinity & drought stress.
