Olive Cultivation under Desert Conditions: Opportunities and Challenges - Session 2

Convener: Arnon Dag, ARO/Volcani

More than 90% of olives are grown around the Mediterranean Basin. Due to climate change, there has been a strong fluctuation in the productivity of those orchards over the last decade. This phenomenon causes a shortage of olive oil and a dramatic increase in its price. The desert area may serve as a promising area for expanding the olive orchard area to address the increased demand for olive oil. The dry climate, hot summer, and cold winter are favorable conditions for growing this crop. In this session we proposed to include the following topics; growing olives in ancient times in the Negev Desert, optimization of irrigation and fertilization, remote and proximate sensing to assess orchard functioning, using low-quality water for irrigation, improving orchard’s soil quality, response to warmer winters, plant protection, olive oil quality and table olive production. Those topics will give the audience a wide spectrum of the challenges and opportunities in expanding olive orchards to desert areas.
