Unlocking the Potential of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) for a Sustainable Future
Convener: Roy Posmanik, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology
The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) offers a transformative solution to address climate challenges and the global food security crisis. By harnessing BSF to upcycle organic waste, we can produce high-quality protein and other valuable byproducts for agricultural applications and alternative energy sources. This session aims to explore the full potential of BSF by fostering industry growth through collaboration and the development of a robust BSF ecosystem. Through a multidisciplinary approach—spanning nutrition, entomology, biochemistry, industrial processes, agriculture, genomics, ecology, microbiology, energy, and economics—the session will tackle key challenges and contribute to a comprehensive knowledge base across the entire value chain. Bringing together academic researchers and industrial developers, the session will showcase cutting-edge R&D efforts in: (1) Innovative use in BSF feed; (3) Genetic optimization for colony health; (3) Precision and AI-assisted BSF rearing; (4) Expanding applications of BSF-derived products. By bridging research and industry, this session will accelerate the development of BSF-based solutions, positioning them as a key driver of sustainable food and waste management systems.
