Global climate change and population growth, demand sustainable strategies to manage waste, reduce emissions, and produce renewable energy. The Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens, BSF) stands out as a key biological bioreactor in the evolving bioconversion trends creating novel circular economy loops. While the majority of the BSF industry is focused on producing insect protein for animal feed, this sector is heavily regulated and limited by safety standards and market constraints.
Targeting biofuels and biogas offers a promising novel and scalable route for insect-based biomanufacturing. We offer to upcycle none feed regulated waste steam into and them to valuable oil, frass and protein. This chain will contribute to two major challenges of the climate crisis: Organic waste management and liquid fuels for heavy transportation, accounts for 20-25% and 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, respectively. While composition of BSF oil is a perfect fit for biofuel especially for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), it is not commercialized due to relatively low volume and market bias to feed production. BugEra adopted genetic technologies, combined with strong computational and entomological capabilities to develop customized novel Black Soldier Fly (BSF) strains. Specifically, we will present a genetically edited strain named BSFx2, a with elevated lipids to unlock the economic barriers of converting organic and agricultural into sustainable lipids for biofuel, produced from non-feed-grade organic wastes.
This presentation will highlight the combination of novel strains and new value chains creating unique bioconversion pathways of climate-resilient biomanufacturing and a low-footprint solutions for global energy and waste challenges.
