Physical Adaptation Options for the Planning of Hot and Arid Climate Urban Environments: A Systematic Review

Category:

Dryland regions face heightened vulnerability to climate change impacts (IPCC, 2019), including extreme heat, intensified precipitation events, droughts, and dust storms – phenomena expected to increase in frequency and severity. Consequently, these environmental stressors pose significant challenges to urban resilience in these regions. This study presents a systematic review of existing, yet fragmented, academic literature on climate change adaptation measures implemented in such settings or examined by simulation. Specifically, it focuses on technological, planning, and ecological measures that support the physical development of cities, considering the current and future impacts of climate change. To ensure comprehensive coverage, we utilized multiple databases, including Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. The research first maps the reported results of adaptation measures – positive, negative, trade-offs, or no effect – and then categorizes positively evaluated measures according to urban planning parameters and overarching adaptation categories. Results will be integrated into a structured, evidence-based guide to support urban planners and policymakers in developing climate-resilient urban environments in arid regions.
