Effects of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Microelements on Hass Avocado under the Controlled Environment

Category:

Hass avocado (Persea americana Mill.cv.Hass) is among the most nutritious fruits, with global consumption increasing annually. However, its productivity remains lower than that of green varieties like Ettinger, which can yield over 20tons per hectare. This research aims to examine the relationship between nutrients availability, developmental indicators, and the fertility of Hass avocado trees. It also seeks to develop an optimal fertilization strategy to enhance fertility and fruit quality.

The experimental treatments involved daily irrigation with varying concentrations of nitrogen (10,20,40,80 and 120mg/L), potassium (10,50 and 100mg/L), phosphorous (1,5 and 10mg/L), and two levels of microelements (3.5mg/L of Fe). Preliminary results indicate that nitrogen at 80mg/L and potassium and potassium at 50mg/L showed diminishing returns. Additionally, microelements supplementation enhanced fruit quality by reducing internal decay by 30%.

Leaf and fruit nutrient analysis revealed that balanced N:K ratio are crucial for optimal fruit development and quality. These findings suggest that a fertilization protocol combining 80mg/L N,50mg/L K,5mh/L P, and moderate microelement supplementation can maximize the productivity of quality of Hass avocados. This study offers actionable insights for avocado growers, promoting a sustainable approach to meet the rising global demand for high quality avocados while addressing the fertility limitations of the Hass variety.
